Analysis of cracking plane geometry in old sandstone columns
Abstract A historical building undergoing restoration has surviving sandstone columns. Originally, two rows of columns supported the upper storeys. From the technical perspective, some of the columns were in a decidedly bad condition. Cracks were visible which went through the shafts forming cracking planes. The objective was to examine how deep those cracks were and determine whether they formed any oblique shear planes. The ultrasonic method was used for screening and the computer analysis of obtained data was conducted providing the basis for determining the depth of cracks and the range of cracking planes. Mentioned columns are localized in one of buildings belonging to Krzyżowa Historical Complex (Poland).
