Restoration effects on experimental dynamic characteristics of masonry stone minarets
Abstract Masonry minarets are sensitive to wind and earthquake forces due to their slenderness and supporting structural system. They are restored in order to safely transfer to future generations. This paper investigates the restoration effects on the dynamic characteristics of masonry stone minarets using ambient vibrations tests. Three historical masonry stone minarets restored by the Regional Directorate of Foundation in Trabzon, Turkey are selected for this purpose. Restorations works such as re-pointing of joints, renewing spoiled stones, scraping cement-based plaster layer coating, rebuilding upper part wall of the minaret balcony, wall surface cleaning and renewing wooden cone were implemented in the selected three minarets. The experimental dynamic characteristics of the selected minarets before and after restoration are determined by Operational Modal Analyses Method using the ambient vibrations. The natural frequency, mode shapes and damping ratios obtained before and after restorations are compared with each other. It has been shown that the dynamic characteristics of the three minarets are positively and negatively affected depending on the restoration works.
