Engineering-geological problems in constructing the Budapest métro
Summary In constructing the underground (metro) network of the capital of Hungary engineering-geological explorations involving 1,000 m drilling per km of track were made. The chosen location of the underground construction was fitted to the geological situation. Temporary high sulphate content of the groundwater, and migrating methane were surmounted. Much experience was gained during tunnelling to help future construction activity. It seems to be a general rule that the sediments of a Tertiary transgression are always more lithified than those of a regression.
