Clayey zones in a rock massif and their role in landslide development
Summary Consideration is given to the influence of clayey zones on landslide development. Zones of weakness in a rock massif can be the lithological bands, lithologenetic fissures, fractures of unloading and tectonic joints. These zones were studied in the Upper Pleistocene glaciolacustrine sediments of the northwestern European part of the USSR, in Mesozoic sediments of the southern part of the Volga region and in Lower Paleozoic sediments of the Crimea and the Caucasus. The paper reports on the study of weakened zones as a means of a proper insight into the mechanism of slide displacements in clayey rocks and as a basis for the prediction of slope stability.
