The comparison method in engineering geology for determining the thrust of landslides
Summary This paper gives an introduction to the application of the method of comparison in engineering geology to calculation of the thrust of landslide according to its principal properties. Eight aspects of basic data and main parameters obtained in situ and their variations under different conditions are discussed which are necessitated in the calculation of thrust, namely: the three-dimensional shape of a sliding mass; the calculation range of the thrust; the coefficient of stability at each sliding stage of a landslide; the shear test and strength criterion for each section of a sliding zone; the combination and variation of external forces imposing on a landslide; the distribution pattern and transmission of the thrust; the adoption of safety factor in calculation and determination of thrust limit according to local conditions. The method described has been proved to be of advantage in a number of engineering practices, particularly preferable when lack of time does not permit to conduct a complicated test-and-study on each parameter.
