Stress analysis of road and spillway excavation slides in sedimentary rock
Summary Two rock slides in sedimentary rock in northwestern Greece are studied using a two-dimensional finite element method. The two slides located at the access road and the spillway of a hydroelectric project, occurred after heavy rainstorms upon termination of the excavation operations. The stresses are computed by applying a combination of excavation relief and ground-water rise forces on the slope surface obtained from the excavation. In both cases the slide surface is outlined by the boundary of the tensile stress region.
