The location of abandoned mine-shafts in rural and urban environments
Summary Magnetic and resistivity surveys have been carried out over abandoned mine-shafts in a rural area free from background noise. The results are compared with those from a similar survey in an urban area and with anomalies predicted from computer and small-scale models. The magnetic survey method is shown to be the most successful technique although the best results were obtained where the shaft filling contains ferrous material. Seismic and gravity methods were shown to be unsatisfactory.
