The use of bentonites for sealing earth dams
Summary The paper presents the results of the laboratory research concerning the impermeabilisation of dams by mechanical mixture of soils and bentonites. The characteristics of seven Romanian bentonites used during the experiments are shown, in comparison with the bentonites known in the rest of the world. Five types of pervious-semipervious soils which constitute the support of the mixtures have been described, with indications of their physical properties. Then, the physical properties of the resulting mixtures especially as concerns their permeability depending on the variation of the bentonite content are discussed. The paper deals with the most suitable proportion of bentonite to be used for achieving the necessary impermeability of each type of soil. An earth dam is presented in the last part of the paper where impermeability has been achieved by the use of a core of siltyclayey sands in a mixture with bentonite.
