Summary The construction of river dams and reservoirs meets special difficulties in flat lands. In Hungary two dams were built on the Tisza river at Tiszalök (1954) and Kisköre (1973) and a third one is planned near Csongrád. The territory is quite flat at the site of the dams. The gradient of the river is 2 cm/km in the river section concerned. The constructions were founded on fine-grained material: clay, silt, fine sand. The reservoir was surrounded by reinforced and elevated levees.
