Preparation of regional maps showing natural and man-made geologic hazards
Summary Geologic hazards are those natural geologic processes or man-made geologic conditions that represent a present-day or future hazard to man's life, health, or property. Planning for development of a region requires a thorough study of all the geologic hazards and an assessment of their potential impact upon proposed land uses. A program is now under way in the State of Oklahoma to prepare a series of regional maps showing geologic hazards. Data are compiled from all available sources onto large-scale base maps and aerial photographs, and these data then are transferred to, and published on, regional maps, normally at scales of 1∶250,000 to 1∶750,000. Natural geologic hazards important in Oklahoma include earthquakes, landslides, expansive soils, floods, karst terrain, and salt dissolution. Man-made geologic hazards important in Oklahoma include underground mining, strip mining, and disposal of industrial wastes.
