Reservoir and dam seepage and anti-seepage measures at hydroelectric power stations in karst areas of southwest China
Abstract In Southwest China, especially in Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces, there are abundant water power resources, thus providing favourable conditions for developing hydroelectric projects in this region. In Southwest China carbonate rocks are widespread and karst formations are strongly developed. Therefore, inevitably many complicated karst-geological problems are encountered in the course of constructing hydroelectric power stations and reservoirs which can be divided into two broad categories: “damming reservoirs” and “grotto-blocking reservoirs”. The problems are emphasized by discussing the karst seepage of reservoirs and dam-sites for nine typical, big- and medium-sized hydroelectric power stations and corresponding anti-seepage measures. The anti-seepage measures can be generalized as curtain-grouting, grotto-blocking, grouted cut-off wall, blanket, coffer dam, and closure well.
