Engineering—Geological features of a massif of carbonate rocks for construction of water reservoirs
Summary Based on accumulated experience obtained during the construction of several water reservoirs located in carbonate rock areas in Poland, the paper presents the principal engineering-geological problems of investigating these rocks. The principles involved in finding a model of the geological structure of a carbonate rock massif and an engineering-geological description of elements of this model, for example: tectonics, fissuring, karst processes, are described. Particular attention is paid to lithological analysis as the main factor in defining the physico-mechanical properties of rocks. The great significance of studies of the weathering horizon, its evolution, characteristics and thickness within the fissured carbonate rocks is underlined as a factor that influences imperviousness of the foundations. The principles defining the hydrogeological condition are presented but especially, the hydrodynamic ones that enable a more detailed geologic model to be erected and to fix the zones of attenuation within a massif of carbonate rocks and of intensive flowage in the underground waters. In the paper some attention is also paid to the necessity of prognoses of changes in hydrogeological conditions around the reservoir and accompanying engineering structures. Prognoses of changes occurring within the carbonate rocks are particularly important. The changes may result not only in filtrational deformations of rocks but also in changes of filtration direction, flow intensity of underground waters, gradients and hydraulic gradients. An analysis of the problems presented is discussed at the design stage and during conctruction of the hydrotechnical engineering structures and so, and the precision needed in studies of the engineering-geological conditions.
