Using geophysical logs in highwall blast design
Summary In surface coal mines, the characterisation of overburden strata by geophysical logging of open boreholes is an important tool for increasing blasting efficiency. The combination of sonic, density, natural gamma and caliper logs shows the depths, thicknesses and effective strengths of constituent beds. With such rock mass data, the blasting engineer can more readily optimise.the diameter, depth and spacing of blastholes,the type, quantity and distribution of explosive charges, andthe lengths of backfill and stemming. Indirectin situ testing by wireline logging is particularly useful where the overburden consists of alternating strong and weak beds and/or where lateral rock mass variability is high.
