S wave velocity in the ground and the damping factor
Summary It has become increasingly necessary to clarify the dynamic properties of the ground for engineering purpose. In this way,in situ measurements of the S wave velocity and the damping factor of the ground have an important significance. We have been trying since 1967 to establish thein situ measurement technique of the S wave velocity and to accumulate data thereon of the ground, especially the solft soils of urban areas in Japan. The measuring method has been established as the “PS Logging Method”. Vew tests to determine damping factor have recently, been carried out using the S wave records from PS logging.
