Computer processing of subsurface impulse radar data
Summary Subsurface radar investigations are usually performed in the profiling mode. With the profile information, interfaces and objects in the strata can be studied. This paper describes applications of impulse radar that are not obvious from that point of view. Originating in the basic formulations of electromagnetic theory an analysis of theoretically detectable phenoma under given conditions is made. Digital sampling of the waveforms permits computer processing to yield numerical values of physical properties in the subsurface. The high rate at which a radar survey is carried out in the field permits vast areas to be studied. Some examples are: Discrimination of echoes from the groundwater table from echoes from the bedrock surface and extreme speeding-up of shallow resistivity surveys.
