Unified fracture, stress and permeability studies
Summary Coreholes can be used to determinein situ fracture (or joint) system, state of stress, and rock permeability by utilizing only one set of equipment. A “straddle packer”, consisting of two inflatable rubber sleeves, is lowered to specified depths in the core hole and permeability tests by either the “constant head” or “pulse” methods are conducted. The same set-up is then used for hydrofracturing stress measurements. An “impression packer” is subsequently lowered to obtain hydrofracture orientation and complete the stress measuremens. The same tool is also used to orient key natural fractures, which together with a “scribe fracture logging” of the core help define the joint sets in the rock mass. Case histories are cited.
