Summary The paper discussesin situ permeability testing performed in boreholes drilled in an extensive site investigation programme for a gold and copper mine infrastructure development at Ok Tedi, Star Mountains, Papua New Guinea.In situ permeability testing consisted of packer tests and failling and constant head tests, undertaken in a wide variety of subsurface materials. Many difficulties have been encountered during the performance of these tests. Test methods, equipment employed and difficulties encountered are described and compared. Interpretation of data is discussed and the cost effectiveness of the various test methods examined.
