Scanning electron microscopy examples of clay residua from crystalline rocks
Summary This article gives examples of the microstructures of clay residua from various crystalline rocks. Within the scope of engineering-geological classification of crystalline rock masses, the processes of weathering and their products which result in the weakening of rocks have been studied with regard to the construction of large dams and railway reconstruction in the region of the Bohemian Massif. The fundamental factors influencing the origin and the character of clay residua and the morphology of mineral grains have been pointed out. Particular stages of hydrolysis have been studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analyses, X-ray and chemical analyses.
