A technique for quantitatively assessing orientation patterns in sand grain surface microtextures
Summary The microtexture of several sand sized particles has been assessed using the intensity gradient technique. Rosette diagrams quantitatively indicate the extent of orientation in the different directions, and in some cases it is shown that subjective interpretation of micrographs may over emphasize the importance of certain features. By separating the rosette diagrams according to different grouping of the magnitude of the the intensity gradient vector, additional information is available, so that the spread in the orientation of sub-parallel features may be readily assessed Possibilities for material discrimination may also exist when using this technique. A computer simulation proves that the effects seen are real and not a function of the analysis method used.
