Forensic Study of Slope Failure Case During Heavy Rainfall: Suggested Preventative and Remedial Measures
Abstract Slope failures are majorly triggered by excessive rainfall and are reported world over. Numerous research studies have been conducted to investigate effect of rainwater ingression on a slope and its stability. This paper reports a case study of a road laid on embankment breaching and caving in near a residential colony in India during rainy season. To study various aspects of failure observed at the site, a pilot study has been performed and effect of various factors contributing to the failure have been analysed through experimental work. The study concluded that soil properties, slope angle and water infiltration contribute for slope failure resulting into such caving in of road. Recommendations have been proposed in the present study based on the experimental work to reduce the failures of future.
