Developments in Perturb and Observe Algorithm for Maximum Power Point Tracking in Photo Voltaic Panel: A Review
Abstract The Photovoltaic (PV) panels used to convert electrical energy from the Sun have conversion efficiency only up to 18%. One of the ways to increase their conversion efficiency is accurate method of extracting maximum power from PV panel by spotting the Maximum Power Point (MPP). As the solar radiation is not constant always, the available maximum power also varies throughout the day and hence Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) becomes continual and essential. Perturb and Observe (P&O) is one of the algorithms used for MPPT and is renowned due to its simplicity. Wrong tracking direction, less convergence speed and oscillations around MPP are the drawbacks of this algorithm which decelerate its usage to the maximum extent. Many researchers develop proven concepts in the literature to overcome these drawbacks. Without comparative assessment, using the developed concepts will not meet the expected outcome for PV panel designer. Without detailed review of recent developments, the researchers may not find scope for future developments towards excellence in this area. The students to become researchers require detail analysis of original concepts with present progresses. To fulfill these requirements, several literature published in the popular journals between the years 2012 and 2019 are reviewed in this paper. The reviewed papers are compared with respect to simplicity of algorithms, type which they belong, number of sensors used and control strategy adopted with convergence speed qualified. This review is expected to render suitable reference for understanding, selection and developments for the students, designers and researchers.
