A Review on Drought Index Forecasting and Their Modelling Approaches
Abstract Drought being one of the costliest natural hazards and its adverse impacts towards the agricultural and socioeconomic sectors has gained concerns among the researchers. Accurate drought forecasting has become undoubtedly important for policy making in water resources planning and management to minimize the impacts suffered. Therefore, this review paper presents a simple and informative overview on drought index forecasting and their modelling approaches with the aim to assist researchers in identifying a suitable model which may well fit their research purposes. The theoretical concepts, input data, types of prediction, evaluation criterion, timescales, benefits and drawbacks are discussed to provide further insights on the application for each model. This review covers published papers from 2017 to 2022 to ensure that the findings are up to date and relevant to the field of study. Guidelines for the future outlook and trend in drought forecasting are projected for continual efforts in improving the accuracy of drought studies.
