At-Rest Lateral Earth Pressure for Coulomb’s Retaining Wall Conditions
An approximate analytical method is developed in this paper to calculate at-rest lateral earth pressure on a retaining wall subject to Coulomb’s Retaining Conditions with positive backslope and non-zero interface friction angle. The solutions were verified using a numerical approach. The procedure presents advantages over current practice using either the Danish Geotechnical Code method or the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Strength Mobilization Factor method and may provide a lower bound for an empirical estimate of wall interface friction angle used in active earth pressure calculations based on the Coulomb theory for retaining walls.
