A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Community Development: 'Oiling the Wheels of Participation'
This article draws upon research undertaken in late 1994 which investigated the role played by community development ideas and community development practitioners within local authorities pursuing decentralisation and democratisation policies The research suggested that, whilst the organisational models pursued by the two Councils considered were very different, most of the actors perceived community development to be central to the success of decentralisation and democratisation policies. The implications of this for the organisation and status of community development within local authorities which are pursuing similar policies are then considered.
