A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
An Experiment in Primary Health Care in Karachi, Pakistan
An experimental Primary Health Care Project utilizing an integrated approach was initiated by an NGO, Health Education and Literacy Project (HELP) in Karachi, Pakistan. The Community Health Worker was the focus of the Project and health was integrated with sanitation, literacy and income-generation to provide a comprehensive package of socio-economic uplift. In addition, the methodology was designed such that the project was sustainable, with the community providing for the maintenance of these activities. The community workers provide education and health care while the community pays them for the services rendered. This helps in the self-sufficiency of the community health workers. The impact of the Health Education is apparent from the results mentioned, whereby the knowledge of the mothers regarding immunization, ORS (Oral Rehydration Salt) therapy and hygienic health practice are vastly improved.
