Community development training: an industry discovering itself
A surge of interest in community development is evident throughout the United States. Accompanying this surge is the recognition of a need for rapid improvements in community development practice. Hence, an active support for training, to improve the performance of practitioners and to assist the community development industry in realizing its full potential. Community development training is distinguished in a number of ways. These are described, drawing on the experience of two institutes at Portland State University. The first of these is aimed at the needs of practitioners in the professional sector. The second, at public servants in the bureaucratic sector. Experience indicates that it would also be useful to offer training to persons in the popular sector and the entrepreneurial sector, for their benefit and on behalf of the maturation of the industry as a whole.
