Space, place and people: a community development approach to mental health promotion in a disadvantaged community
Mental health problems are prevalent in disadvantaged communities. We encountered these issues first-hand as community development workers in a community of high unemployment and social welfare support located in the south west region of Sydney, Australia. In our community centre, we saw the spectrum of mental health, from mental well-being and resilience in extreme circumstances to mental health problems resulting from poverty and marginalization and significant psychiatric disability. We describe our work in this community with reference to mental health intervention at three levels: people (promoting individual capabilities), space (enabling environmental infrastructure) and place (developing soft infrastructure).
