Socio-Economic Restructuring in Resource Communities: Evolving a Comparative Approach
This paper evolves an approach within which socio-economic restructuring in resource communities is explained. It deals with communities which are integrated in the world market, thus having characteristics of a developed economy or economy under industrial development. The paper discusses regional development theories, resulting in the idea of resource communities as basic units of rural settlement and presents an approach on how restructuring issues should be tackled. It stresses the importance of interpreting restructuring processes in a broad context. The conceptualizations deal with general, sector-specific, local-specific and policy-related categories: each of these categories has a role of its own in the explanation of restructuring, the outcome being a combination of them.
