Voluntary Associations in West Africa: A Political Perspective
Most studies of voluntary associations in developing countries focus on sociological and anthropological perspectives. This paper sheds light on the political dimension of these associations. The case study is a community development association in Accra, Ghana. The study observes the development of the association, from apolitical to political, through four phases. The main conclusion is that voluntary associations can be used as integrative mechanisms to mediate between communities and government, to link traditional and modern authorities, and to serve as socialising agencies for modern political behaviour.
