A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Sustainable development beyond ethical pronouncements: the role of civil society and networking
Only the beneficiaries and not the readers of this article are the ones who are going to make development sustainable. This, because greater participation of the civil society in sustainable development (SD) is a ‘political/power’ and not an ‘ethical/technical’ issue. Agreeing on the politics - beyond ethical pronouncements - is where the challenge lies. ‘Working with the poor as protagonists’ has yet to go from the normative to the operational and new commitments are needed to achieve this. The features of a bottom-centered, civil society-rooted development process are presented including the capacities deemed necessary to intervene. ‘Ethics-lead’ and ‘politically-led’ processes to SD are compared and the role of moral advocates, social mobilizers and political advocates are contrasted. A call is made to build SD coalitions that bring together ‘single issue causes’ focusing them on global/local political issues.
