A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Community development, social diversity, and the new metropolis
This article calls for the re-conception of what has historically been a monocultural approach to community development as a field of practice and subject of study. It explores some elements of multi-cultural community development in the face of the ongoing redistribution of racial and ethnic populations in metropolitan areas. While community development assumes that community is a unit of solution, as the social characteristics of community members change, community itself can become a contested concept raising problems for practitioners and theorists alike. The article identifies the range of skills, knowledge, values, and approaches that would be appropriate when combining difference with unity.
