Challenges to Progressive Service Organizations: Planact of South Africa
This paper explores the challenges faced by progressive service organizations as they experience the transition from revolutionary struggle to electoral success. The focus is on Planact, an organization located in Johannesburg, South Africa, that was established to provide technical assistance to black civic associations and trade unions resisting the apartheid regime. With the ascension to power of the African National Congress, Planact confronts a new terrain of donors, clients, and staff possibilities with important implications for its ideological principles and organizational structure.
