Integrating Community Development and Urban Planning In Western Australia
“Community” is a dynamic concept that is always developing, declining or changing in some way. A “sense of community” is a noun. It is something that can be possessed, achieved and marketed. It is a static concept that lends itself to design solutions and physical determinism. Urban planners, working in an achievement-oriented culture, are particularly prone to perceiving community in design terms. A reappraisal of community results in a questioning of urban planning as currently undertaken. These are the first steps towards more humane planning processes.
