The Impact of Tourism on the Amish Subculture: A Case Study
This study examines the influence of tourism on the Amish, based on research from Northeast Ohio, U.S.A. Results indicate that tourism has not threatened core elements of Amish culture, but has several notable impacts. Traffic and crowds cause Amish to avoid certain areas. Land prices have increased, making it difficult to purchase farmland. Some Amish-owned businesses are dependent on tourism, and others work for businesses indirectly dependent on tourism. Some Amish women work directly for tourist businesses as waitresses and maids. The results are discussed in terms of how tourism has integrated the Amish into the general economy of the area.
