Crafts, cash and conservation in highland Nepal
The highland areas of Nepal present intractable problems in relation to environmental conservation and economic development. In eastern Nepal, several groups of craftspeople have shown how, with minimal outside assistance and without serious disruption to family life, they can use their traditional skills to contribute to the resolution of these problems and thereby avoid the necessity to migrate to the southern plains or urban areas which has been the fate of many of the hill families. Similar initiatives could be equally beneficial in other highland areas of Nepal and probably also elsewhere in the Himalayan-Hindu-Kush region.
