Migration and Ethnic Identity: The Black Jews of Ethiopia and their Settlement in Israel
Migration has encompassed a broad range of interests ranging from the social and economic to the political. The Ethiopian Jewish community in its emigration to Israel has faced mounting challenges jeopardizing their ‘uniqueness’. Using this group as a case study, this paper documents these developments focusing on the remigration and immigration process, and on how religion, changing family roles, language and color have impacted on their ethnic uniqueness and identity. Guidelines for the helping professions in assisting this community are noted.
