Investigation of historic masonry via radar reflection and tomography
In recent years, radar applications to historical masonry buildings have cautiously increased, as the request for non- destructive investigation of such buildings has become urgent. As historic masonry can be very inhomogeneous and present a 'lossy' behavior, application and interpretation from radar data can sometimes be difficult. Two site applications are here reported of successful masonry structure investigation via radar reflection and tomography, where the aims were to locate cavities in the walls and to obtain information regarding the type of masonry and the material conditions. For the second case, a brief description of Travel Time tomography is given together with modalities for a correct planning of the tomographic data collection aimed at improved section coverage and anomaly resolution. Recommendations for an accurate data analysis and interpretation are also discussed.
