With climate change leading to more extreme and variable weather conditions, the need for buildings that can adapt and respond to these challenges is more urgent than ever. The relationship between a building and its environment is fundamental, not only to ensure the well-being of users, but also to reduce the impact on the environment by limiting energy consumption for air conditioning and management of the building. Various studies in the literature explain the concept of the adaptive building envelope as a technological solution capable of responding to specific climatic conditions, thereby promoting greater sustainability in the built environment and ensuring occupant comfort. This chapter explains the concept of the climate-adaptive building envelope. It not only lists the various definitions in the literature, but also the most important features that are useful for understanding the functional principles. The critical and detailed analysis of emblematic and recent case studies helps the reader to understand the concept.
