The Influence of Socio-cultural Factors on Open Space in Fisherman Settlement, Udupi District—Karnataka
The fisherman neighbourhood has specific character and culturally rich settlements. The neighbourhood has arrangement of closely placed cluster of housing units with high density. The major focus is being their profession that gives rise to many interdependent activates on daily basis. Most of the interrelated activities take place in open space as cleaning—drying of fish, repairing of nets carried out majorly by women. Their leisure activities as children play, elderly group chatting with neighbours or festival events also taking place in the common spaces of neighbourhood. Hence, these open spaces have a significant impact on the life of fishermen family and existing principles of fisherman community. The common open spaces in the spatial configuration of settlements provide opportunities for fisherman families to live, flourish socially and economically. The objective of study is to identify various socio-cultural factors shaping the open spaces in fisherman community located in coastal region of Udupi district, Karnataka state, and also to classify typology of open spaces existing in morphology of settlement. The study will demonstrate the existence of a significant richness of typologies and discuss relationship between open spaces with different components of morphology. The research aims to provide an understanding about open space arrangement as important component of fisherman settlement to have more socially sustainable progress of community.
