Using Focus Groups in Applied Urban Research
This chapter explores the many ways that focus groups are employed in applied urban research. Applied urban research underpins and directly influences urban practices to resolve urban issues. Urban practices can be policies, plans and strategies related to diverse fields such as transport, placemaking, area renewal, new development and other endeavours. Applied urban research is undertaken at different spatial scales in a range of settings: site, neighbourhood, district, city, city region. The surprise in this chapter is the adaptability of the focus group method to suit these various urban research contexts. By investigating the focus group method, I hope to persuade the reader to the value of the method and the many purposeful ways to deploy the technique in applied urban research.
