A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Public Utilization of Rooftop Garden at Commercial Buildings in Hot and Humid Climate
Green roof is able to reduce the environmental issues such as the urban heat island. Besides that, the social benefits can also be achieved by the provision of green roof. Nevertheless, the application of it incurs additional cost such as the construction and maintenance costs. Therefore, it is pivotal to ensure the optimum utilization of green roof. This study aims to derive a preliminary idea regarding the public utilization of intensive green roof which is the rooftop garden. Two commercial buildings located in Malaysia had been selected for the study. The observation and the questionnaire survey methods had been executed to identify the characters of the rooftop gardens, as well as the public utilization of them. From the study, it is found that the design, vegetation types and other supporting spaces affect the utilization pattern and activities executed at the rooftop garden. These aspects also determine the purpose, frequency, time and duration of visiting the rooftop garden. The findings from this study are able to encourage further research of the appropriate green roof criteria, especially for the commercial buildings in hot and humid climate.
