Truss Model: General Theorems and Methods of Force, Displacement and Finite Elements
We first present the simple truss model, as the platform to explain the main ideas in constructing the model ingredients and developing the solution methods that are later used for all other structural engineering problems presented in this book. The truss model is also used to illustrate the traditional core knowledge of structural engineering in terms of so-called general theorems that served well the generations of structural engineers to carry out simple hand calculations of structure displacements and internal forces by using traditional force and displacement methods. The same model is then used to present a more modern approach based upon the finite element method, including several important aspects of finite element technology.
