On the Reliability of Deteriorating Structures
Abstract A reliability analysis approach for structural systems is developed taking into consideration the deterioration of the resistance due to random loading effects. The functional relation between the deterioration of the resistance and the, loading history is described. In order to treat the physical process consistently over the entire range of the expected load spectrum, the limit load range is also included in the analysis. The deterioration of the resistance in the critical cross section of a structure is formulated as a function of the underlying physical mechanism i.e. the length of the fatigue crack. This approach — unlike the method of linear damage accumulation based on S-N curves — allows the consideration of the influence of the initial condition of the material i.e. the number and the severity of the flaws present in the material, e.g. produced by the fabrication process.
