Seeking Contemporary Urban Comfort Through Vernacular Architectural Principles in Hot Arid Climate
Abstract The chapter deals with urban comfort by utilizing the old traditional vernacular architecture. It describes the effects of sunlight, wind pattern, shading, and comfort. Examples were given from ancient Iran cities like Yazd with hot arid zone and the use of “Wind Towers” in the summer period. Effect of water and vegetation combined with courtyard used to moderate the temperature and create harmony between day and nights. One of the most effective elements to reduce the heat in arid zone is the use of shading. Urban comfort discussed the effect of reflecting materials. Water rational normally needed but its presence is a major necessity in creating comfort. Also urban density and street orientation additional element is discussed in this chapter.
