Visualization Analyses Using Citespace on Researches of BIM Development from 2003 to 2017
Building Information Modeling (BIM), as an important way for the development of the construction industry towards informatization, has been a potential for low consumption, low pollution, and green sustainability. CiteSpace focuses on finding critical points in the development of a field or a domain visually, which could give readers a clearer understanding on BIM development. However, the existing studies mainly underlined BIM technology from the single perspective of research focus categories, lacking in that of BIM development history. Hence, focuses based on three different periods of BIM development were characterized in this paper. 2410 BIM-related papers were firstly selected in Web of Science from 2003 to 2017. They were then visually analyzed by CiteSpace in four multiple views, viz., time distribution, representative articles and authors, key words and terms, and research trend, based on which, research focuses were further explored according to the three periods of BIM development. Results showed that the number of BIM-related literature smoothly increased with the peak reaching in 2016. The most common key words and terms related to BIM include construction industry, design, system, management, framework, simulation, etc. The trend of BIM is oriented in multidisciplinary development. Education of BIM, Features of BIM and Interdisciplinary application of BIM are the three specific focuses in different periods of BIM development. It is expected to provide a valuable, timely, repeatable and flexible approach to track the development of research on BIM visually as well as offer instructions and references for further research on BIM.
