A Solution for Reduction of Scour at Bridge Pier Through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulations
In the present analysis, the effectiveness of a collar which is provided around an elliptical bridge pier in the minimization of the scouring effect is studied through CFD simulation. Scour intensity may depend on multiple factors like depth of the water, pier topology, and flow velocity approach. The present paper aims for the reduction of the horse-shoe effect by introducing an extended surface like a collar around the bridge pier which finally reduces the scour at the pier foundation, using ANSYS-fluent software. From the results of the present paper, it is observed that the collar having a width of 0.675 m arranged at a height of 0.5 m from the base exhibits better results for the considered operating conditions of the fluid flow.
