Abstract Manufacturing operations present extremely demanding applications of tribology. Elevated temperatures, high processing speeds, demanding surface finish and reliability requirements, and environmental considerations all play a role in determining tooling life and product quality. Tribological phenomena are important to the viability and optimization of most manufacturing processes, but relatively little attention has been paid to this subject compared to the efforts directed towards tribology in machine elements, for example.
