Bearing Capacity of Reinforced Strip Foundation Beds on Compressible Clays
Abstract The paper presents a method for the estimation of bearing capacity of a strip footing on the surface of a geosynthetic reinforced foundation bed laid over soft homogeneous clay. Most studies for the estimation of bearing capacity of a reinforced dense granular layer over soft clay are based on Meyerhof’s approach and based on general shear failure of soft clay. Vesic’s cavity expansion theory that considers the compressibility/stiffness of the ground together with its shear strength and the reinforcement assumed to be subjected to pure axial pullout force are incorporated in the proposed solution. A parametric study quantifies the contributions of various parameters. The predictions compare well with the results available in the literature.
