Subsea Repair of Concrete Weight Coating on 30″ North Sea Pipeline
Abstract The 30″ North Sea Gas Pipeline in the Danish sector had suffered damage to the concrete weight coating and the corrosion coating in several spots on an exposed part just outside a subsea valve assembly protection cover, located approx. 1.5km from the Tyra gas field. The damage was probably caused by fishing activities such as trawlboards and other heavy fishing gear. To repair this damage several methods of repair were considered to find one which could provide both the necessary mechanical protection, as well as adequate corrosion protection of the bare metal areas on the pipeline and with a minimum of cleaning of the pipe surface. After considering all the alternatives, it was decided to carry out a repair using a new product called DENSIT. DENSIT is a composite material mainly made by mixing Portland cement with micro-silica and superplasticizer. The ultrafine micro-silica particles fill the voids between the cement grains, thus creating an extremely dense paste, giving the material a number of unique properties. The material can be pumped through long lengths of hose and will cure underwater. The paper will describe the actual design, planning and repair work carried out on two sections covering the full surface of 18m and 20m of the above mentioned pipeline, and the results of laboratory examination of the capability of the product to act as a corrosion protection to bare metal areas.
