Comparative Analysis of Shape Memory Alloy and Elastomer Composite Plate for Bridge Bearings
Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are the special materials having two peculiar characteristics of Shape Memory Effect (SME) and Superelasticity. The superelastic materials regain their shape after removal of loads. Hence these materials are highly recommended where alternate loading unloading conditions or dynamic loading is predominant. The popularly used SMA NiTi has very high cost. Though it is widely used in medical, dental and aeroplace industry, it is not used in civil engineering industry. With the development of cheaper copper and Fe based SMAs the research to use it in civil engineering industry is developing. In this article the comparative analysis of elastomeric plate and composite plate made with Fe based SMA and elastomer is studied to use these composite plates in elastomeric bridge bearing. The behavior of composite plate with different layers of Fe based Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) and Elastomeric material under axial loading is studied. The deflection of composite plates is decreased upto 84% compared to elastomeric bearing.
